The Guildhall School of Music and Drama (GSMD) in their autumn season offer opportunities not only to catch young up and coming performers, but also to heard works you might not otherwise be able to.
In October, Graham Johnson and Susan Waters will be directing a performance of Schumann's Lieder und Gesange aus Wilhelm Meister, Op. 98 a and the rarely heard Requiem, Op. 148. Also in October there are performances of Ted Hughes's version of Lorca's Blood Wedding.
Then in November there is a fascinating triple bill of two Massenet operas and a Martinu one. In La Navarraise Massenet gets closer to verismo than elsewhere in his output, whereas in Le Portrait de Manon he returns to his most famous opera. Finally the bill is completed with Martinu's Comedy on the Bridge. Stephen Barlow directs and Peter Robinson (chief conductor of British Youth Opera) conducts.
Finally in November, part two of David Edgar's epic adaptation of Charles Dickens's Nicholas Nickleby.
