OperaCoast is a weekend operatic workshop, based in Eastbourne and they provide the opportunity to have an operatic holiday with a difference. During a weekend workshop, singers work on scenes from an opera with professional music and theatre directors, performing the work at the end of a weekend. Last year's workshop was on Verdi's La Traviata and this year they will be doing scenes from Stravinsky's The Rakes Progress on 19-21 July, at Eastbourne's Birley centre.
If you wish to sing in the chorus there is no audition, but singers must turn up with prior knowledge of the scenes being performed and to be able to sing from memory. If you wish to sing a solo role, then there are auditions (further information from OperaCoast's auditions page).
The music director for the workshop is Gregory Rose, the music director of the Jupiter Orchestra and professor of conducting at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The director is Susannah Water, who will be directing Orlando Gough's new youth opera, Imago, at Glyndebourne this year. The pianist is Nigel Foster, founder of the London Song Festival.
Sounds like a delightful way to spend a weekend on the Sussex coast, exploring one of 20th century opera's masterpieces from the inside.
Further information and booking details from the Opera Coast website.
