Sir Antonio Pappano, the musical director of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, is being presented with the Incorporated Society of Musicians' Distinguished Musician Award this evening (17 January 2013). Suzi Digby OBE, President of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, said: 'In offering Sir Antonio Pappano its Distinguished Musician Award for 2012, the ISM is acknowledging the immense contribution he has made and continues to make to the UK's musical life.'

Pappano became musical director of Covent Garden in 2002, having spent the previous 10 years as music director of La Monnaie, in Brussels. His repertoire at Covent Garden has been eclectic, ranging from The Ring and The Trojans, to Mark-Antony Turnage's Anna Nicole and Harrison Birtwistle's The Minotaur along with the Italian repertoire including the outstanding Il Trittico. He has given the impression that he is capable of conducting virtually anything in the repertoire, and turning in a performance which makes intelligently dramatic sense. He is also principal conductor of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome with whom he also records, notably the recent EMI recording of Rossini's Guillaume Tell, which was brought to the 2012 Proms.

The ISM is the UK's professional body for musicians, providing services to its membership and promoting the art of music and championing the interests of musicians. Its Distininguished Musician Award was instituted in 1976 with a presentation to Sir Alexander Gibson. Recent recipients have included Dame Janet Baker (2007), Sir Mark Elder (2008), John Stephens (2009), Judith Weir (2010) and Sarah Connolly (2011).
