Summer at the Royal Academy

Summer term at the Royal Academy includes an interesting mix, with a number of themed series including Bach Cantatas, Haydn Symphonies and the double bass. Opera includes Dido and Aeneas, L'enfant et les sortileges and Peter Maxwell Davies' The Lighthouse as well as a pair of musicals.

The 400+ series celebrates experiments in sound, the 400 referring to 400 years since Monteverdi. The series includes viola player Garth Knox with RAM viola students (19 April), Britten and Dowland for voice and guitar (26 April), Dowland arranged Joanna MacGregor and Shostakovich (1 May),

You can hear new works for double bass performed by the Academy's double-bass ensemble (!) on 2 May, and there is a masterclass in the instrument on 13 May.

Opera includes collaboration with the BBC Symphony Orchestra to present Ravel's L'enfant et les sortileges in the Barbican Hall, conducted by Stephane Deneve (26 April), a staged double bill of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Peter Maxwell Davies' The Lighthouse directed by John Ramster with Lionel Friend conducting the Peter Maxwell Davies 16, 17 May). Musical theatre is covered with Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh's Little Me (18, 21,22,23 June) and the European premiere of John Bucchino's A Catered Affair with a book by Harvey Fierstein (20, 21, 22, 23 June).

The Bach Cantata series takes place Monthly on Sunday lunch-times (21 April, 12 May, 23 June), and the Academy will be exploring Venetian Baroque at the Spitalfields Festival (21 June). Their Haydn series continues on 15 May with Symphony no. 43. On a different scale the Academy Concert Orchestra will be playing Wagner with Mark Elder (19 April),  Semyon Bychkov will be conducting them in Strauss's Ein Heldenleben (14 June).
