New musical director for the Temple Church

The Temple Church has announced that from later this year, their musical director will be Roger Sayer. The current incumbent, James Vivian, is becoming the Director of Music at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, this autumn. Roger Sayer has been at Rochester Cathedral since 1994, as Director of Music and as Organist. He is also Deputy Chorus Director of London Symphony Chorus, working with conductors Valery Gergiev, Sir Mark Elder and the late Sir Colin Davis. A prizewinner at the St Albans International Organ Competition, Sayer is a guest teacher at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. (Further info and a video announcement after the break).

Sayer will direct the choir of men and boys at the Temple Church and will have the benefit of the restored organ. Notable events this season, for the new director and his choristers, include a performance of Britten’s St Nicholas with the Aurora Orchestra in November as part of the Temple Music Foundation's autumn series of concerts, and a gala concert at Cadogan Hall. Sayer will also direct the Temple Church Choir in a performance of Bach and Vivaldi, part of a one-week series from the church, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 Live in Concert from 16th – 20th December.

Sayer's first engagement with the Temple Church choir will be choral evensong for All Saints Day, on 31 October 2013.

For those interested in following the complicated manoevrings in the organ loft, Timothy Byram-Wigfield the previous incumbent at St. George's Chapel, Windsor is moving to All Saints, Margaret Street in succession to Paul Brough.
