Spring season at the Royal Academy of Music

The Royal Academy of Music's Spring season includes series devoted to Tippett's piano sonatas and string quartets, Mozart's chamber music along with the continuing series of Bach cantatas. Distinguished visitors include Oliver Knussen, Trevor Pinnock, Edward Gardner and Semyon Bychkov. The Academy Song Circle is very active and there is a chance to hear rarely performed music by Enescu, Skalkottas and Lou Harrison. Royal Academy Opera are performing Handel's Ariodante

In the David Josefowitz Recital Hall there is a programme of music by Georges Enescu devised by the current Hodgson Fellow, Marion Fischer-Dieskau (7/1/2014). The Academy Song Circle are performing a programme of Poulenc Songs (14/1), giving their annual Schubertiade (3/2), performing a Valentine's day concert (11/2), a programme entitled Songs of the Nightingale (5/3) and a programme of American Song (18/3). The Song Circle makes its annual appearance at the Wigmore Hall in a programme devoted to ten Goethe poems, each set by two composers including Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt, Loewe, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann and Wolf


In the Academy's Tippett series two student quartets the Delmege and Kustendyke Quartets perform quartets by Tippett and Beethoven (16/1) there is a masterclass with Steven Osborne on Tippett and Beethoven piano sonatas (16/1) with performances of the sonatas the following week (23/1), and Joseph Havlat joins the Alauda Quartet for Tippett's Piano Sonata no. 2 and String Quartet no.3 (30/1)

Another series is devoted to Mozart's Chamber Music starting with the Gran Partita conducted by Keith Bragg (17/1) and continuing with concerts devoted to Mozart's quintets (21/1), piano trios and quartets (28/1), Prussian quartets (5/2), piano chamber music (6/2), clarinet quintet (7/1), wind chamber music (11/1) and violin sonatas (13/2).

Their Bach Cantata Series continues with Iain Ledingham directing Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen BWV65 and Gott soll allein mein Herz haben BWV169 (19/1), and Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn BWV152, Wo gehest du hin? BWV166 and Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben! BWV102 (16/2), and Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan III BWV100, Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn! BWV157 and Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben? BWV8 (16/2), Gottes Zeit is dei allerbeste Zeit BWV106, Ich glaube, liebe Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben! BWV109, Schmuck dich, O liebe Seele BWV654 and O Mensch, bewein dein Sunde gross BWV622 (6/4). The period band is led be a roster of distinguished leaders including Rachel Podger, Madeleine Easton and Margaret Faultless.

There is a mini-series devoted to the music of Oliver Knussen included an illustrated talk with the composer (19 & 21/2)

The Academy's percussion, organ and string departments are collaborating to perform Lou Harrison's Concerto for Organ with Percussion Orchestra inspired by Indonesian gamelan music and Joseph Pereira's Strophe for for vibraphone and string quartet.

Trevor Pinnock conducts the Academy Soloists ensemble in Mahler (arranged Schoenberg), Zemlinsky and Wagner (14/2). Edward Gardner conducts the Academy Concert Orchestra in an all Janacek programme  (28/2). Mark Elder conducts the Academy Concert Orchestra in movements from Verdi's operas, Semyon Bychkov conducts the Academy Symphony Orchestra in Franz Schmidt's Symphony No. 2 (28/3)

Chroma are performing six new pieces by Academy composers alongside Michael Zev Gordon's Glass Mountain (30/1).  Guitarist Michael Button is joined by tenor Julian Gregory for a programme of Berkeley, Dowland and Britten including Berkeley's Songs of the Half-Light (16/2). The Zacharias Quartet are giving a programme of music by Skalkottas (28/2)

There is a chance to catch Tod Machover's opera Death and the Powers in a live simulcast from Dallas Opera (16/2).

Royal Academy Opera is performing Handel's Ariodante conducted by Jane Glover, directed by Paul Curran and designed by Robert Innes Hopkins

Prizes include the final of the Joan Chissell Schumann Lieder Prize (22/1), the Worshipful Company of Musicians Harriet Cohen Bach Prize (29/1), the Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks Award and Webb Award for Accompanists (26/2), the Buffet Crampon Prize Winner's Recital (27/2), the Worshipful Company of Musicians Brass Ensemble Prize (26/3)
