Tenor William Wallace was named the winner of this year's Handel Singing Competition, organised by the London Handel Festival. At the final on 4 April 2016 at St George's Church, Hanover Square, Wallace took home the Regina Etz Prize, having sung 'Hide thou thy hated beams, O sun ...' and 'Waft her angels through the skies' from Handel's Jephtha, 'Tis well, my friends ... Call Forth Thy Powers' from Judas Maccabaeus and 'Fatto inferno ... Pastorello d’un povero armento' from Rodelinda

Russian Soprano Galina Averina took the Michael Oliver Prize for second place, with Meili Li taking the Farinelli Prize for Counter-Tenors, and soprano Marie Lys winning the Michael Normington Audience Prize. The other finalists were sopranos Shaked Bar and Pavla Flámová. The adjudicators were Edward Blakeman, Catherine Denley, Michael George, Valerie Masterson and Ian Partridge, and the accompaniment was provided by Laurence Cummings and the London Handel Orchestra.

William Wallace is currently studying as a 2015/16 Young Artist at the National Opera Studio, and he is funded by the Nelly Groner Trust. In 2015, he graduated from the Royal College of Music where he studied with Tim Evans Jones.

In 2015 we saw William Wallace as Mr Upfold in the college's production of Britten's Albert Herring and also as the schoolmaster in British Youth Opera's production of Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen. We saw Marie Lys as Dalinda in the 2016 London Handel Festival/Royal College of Music production of Handel's Ariodante, and saw Meili Li as Artemis in Henze's Phaedra at the Guildhall School in 2015.
