David Matthews' Piano Concerto receives its first London performance on 16 July 2016 when the 17-year-old American pianist Thomas Nickell (read my interview with Thomas) makes his UK debut performing the concerto with the Orchestra of the Swan, conductor David Curtis. Nickell will also be the piano soloist in Bach's Keyboard Concerto in D minor, BWV1052

The concert also includes music from Walton's Henry V, Britten's Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, and Steve Martland's orchestration of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, originally written for organ. Rather intriguingly, the concert will be complete by Nickell's performance of his own Piano Sonata No. 3 in C.

David Matthews' Piano Concerto was written in 2010 using just piano and strings. The work was commissioned by the Dartington International Summer School and premiered there by Helen Reid with Trinity College of Music String Ensemble, conducted by Nick Pendlebury.
