The fruit of collaboration; hear Making Music's 'Adopt a Composer' pairings on BBC Radio 3

For many amateur groups, the idea of commissioning a piece is a scary and remote process, whilst young composers do not always get the chance to embed themselves in a performing group and come to understand how to craft music to take advantage of the group's particular strengths.

Making Music's Adopt a Composer scheme aims to take the pain out of this process and each year it pairs amateur choirs, orchestras and ensembles with young composers, each composer writing a work specially for their particular group. In 2015/16, six ensembles were paired with six composers and there is a further chance to hear the resulting works (premiered in 2016) as BBC Radio 3 is broadcasting all six works in the week 23-27 January 2017, after the main evening concert. The works are very diverse with inspirations ranging from ancient artefacts to the contemporary refugee crisis. The full timetable of broadcasts is:

The Adopt a Composer scheme was launched in 2000 since when there have been 89 new commissions, each one written for the particular skills of an amateur choir, orchestra or ensemble. This year there are five premieres to look forward to in 2017:

  • Strathendrick Singers with Aran Browning on 26 Mar, 7pm at Killearn Kirk, Glasgow G63 9NJ,
  • Glasgow School of Art Choir with Shona Mackay on 27 May, 8pm at Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum,
  • Croydon Bach Choir with Mark Boden on 01 July, 7.30pm at Croydon Minster, Croydon,
  • Horsham Symphony Orchestra with Adriano Adewale on 01 July, 7.30pm at The Capitol, Horsham,
  • London Medical Orchestra with Martin Humphries on 02 July, 6pm at St Mary Brookfield, London NW5 1SL.
