Looking ahead: Autumn season at the Howard Assembly Rooms

The Autumn season at the Howard Assembly Rooms at Opera North, Leeds, includes a range a classical chamber music concerts. Violinist Leila Josefowicz and pianist John Novacek will be performing a programme of by Sibelius, Prokofiev and contemporary Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, whilst soprano Gweneth Ann Rand and pianist Simon Lepper perform Messiaen's lush 1945 song-cycle Harawi. In association with Leeds Lieder, baritone Benjamin Appl and pianist Joseph Middleton (director of Leeds Lieder) will perform Schumann's Dicterliebe, Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte, and three settings of Yeats by Ivor Gurney and Marian Ingoldsby. Pianist Imogen Cooper brings a recital which combines Beethoven and Haydn with Thomas Adès’ stunning “explosion” of a Dowland lute song, Darknesse Visible.

The Gavin Bryars Ensemble, including Bryars himself, tenor John Potter and sing-songwriter Gavin Friday, will be performing Gavin Bryars' Nothing like the sun, a setting of eight Shakespeare sonnets in a work which was originally co-production between Opera North and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Finally for Christmas, the choir of Clare College, Cambridge, perform music by Tallis, Praetorius, Howells, Britten, Tavener and Rutter, as well as two world premieres by Joshua Pacey and Graham Ross.
