Coming up at the Barbican

This month at the Barbican includes opera by Jonathan Dove and Rameau (plus Massenet on film), with a chance to immerse yourself in Villa Lobos. The BBC Symphony Orchestra explores Messiaen's visions of the beyond, whilst the Academy of Music looks at the Bach dynasty. Esa-Pekka Salonen's violin concert gets its UK premiere, and Will Todd has a new work premiered.


Tonight the Guildhall School opens one of their largest and ambitious productions, Jonathan Dove's opera The Adventures of Pinnochio (originally premiered by Opera North) which runs from 4 to 10 March at the Silk Street Theatre. The Rameau celebrations continue with Christophe Rousset directing Les Talens Lyriques in Rameau's Les Indes Galante, his opera-ballet which presents four stories about love in exotic lands. The cast includes Carolyn Sampson and Kenneth Tarver (6 March).


Saturday March 8 is another Total Immersion day at the Barbican, with films and concerts of music by Heitor Villa-Lobos, a valuable chance to get to grips with his fecund talents. There is a lunchtime concert of chamber and vocal music from students of the Guildhall School, the BBC Singers perform his choral music including the amazing Bachianas brasileiras no. 6 (the one with the fugue in 11/8, which is usually done in the instrumental version), and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo giving a concert in the evening.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra return on 19 March under Sylvain Cambreling with Messiaen's Eclairs dur l'Au-dela (his visions of beyond). Sakari Oramo conducts them in a programme of Sibelius, Shostakovich and Esa-Pekka Salonen, including the UK premiere of Salonen's Violin Concerto with Leila Josefowicz (26 March).

Richard Egarr directs the Academy of Ancient Music in a programme of Mozart, Haydn and members of the Bach dynasty, with mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager (26 March)

Crouch End Festival Chorus will be performing a new work by Will Todd alongside Mahler's Second Symphony (22 March). The Westminster Schools Symphony Orchestra, the choir of Westminster School and Westminster Choral Society perform the orchestral version of Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle (24 March)

John Eliot Gardiner conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in a programme of music by Schumann and Mendelssohn, including Alina Ibragimova in Schumann's Violin concerto.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Ivary Ilja are giving a programme of romances by Rachmaninov and Vliere, setting poems by Pushkin, plus music by Georgy Sviridov (10 March)


On Sunday 9 March Bill Morrison's film about mining communities in North-East England will be accompanied by Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson's score. And Met Opera Live presents Jonas Kaufmann and Sophie Koch in Massenet's Werther (15 March). And the Bolshoi Ballet film of The Golden Age, Yuri Grigorovich's ballet to Shostakovich's score is in the cinema on 30 March.

The LSO Community Choir islso.co.uk/community-choir performing at LSO St Luke's on 21 March, David Lawrence conducts them in music by Craig McLeish, Ruairi Edwards and Jay Stannard. And the LSO Community Gamelan Group are at LSO St Luke's also (22 March).
