Requiem in a Day

Dorset-based composer Matthew Coleridge's Requiem has already been performed a number of times in the UK and Europe. Now, Coleridge is planning to take it on tour with his Requiem in a Day project. Each Requiem in Day takes the form of choral workshops, with local singers being spending the day being guided through the piece by Coleridge and culminating in a performance in the evening. These will take place at venues across the country, with the first one tomorrow, 2 November 2019 at St James's Church, Louth, Lincolnshire, with organist Jeffrey Makinson from Lincoln Cathedral and baritone Allan Smith (Director of Music at St James's Church, Louth), soprano Gaynor Morgan and the cello soloist for this performance is Gabriella Swallow who grew up in Lincolnshire.

The format has already been tested, and his year, over 140 workshop singers performed the Requiem to a sell-out audience in Devon’s Buckfast Abbey. Many participants spoke about a deeply affecting experience and how powerfully emotive the music is [see video below].

Matthew Coleridge is a self-taught composer from a musical family, both his father and grandfather were composers, and his a cappella works have been recorded by ensembles such as the Queen's Six.

Further dates for Requiem in Day in 2020:

  • March 28 London (St James, Sussex Gardens)
