David Hare's play The Moderate Soprano tells the story of the founding of Glyndebourne, relating John Christie's passion for the soprano Audrey Mildmay and the way their romance was woven into Christie's found of the Glyndebourne Festival where the opening performance was Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro with Mildmay as Susanna.

The play was premiered at the Hampstead Theatre in 2015, and Michael Billington in The Guardian gave it four stars, describing the play as 'enjoyably complex', and 'Hare’s moving play, while telling a good, if not exactly unfamiliar story, is about many other things – including the contradictory nature of Englishness, sexual passion and the quest for the ideal.'

The production is now coming to the Duke of York's Theatre, running from 6 April to 30 June 2018 (previews from 6/4, opening night 12/4). Jeremy Herrin, who directed the production in Hampstead, returns to direct and there will be new designs by Bob Crowley. Roger Allam and Nancy Carroll will reprise their roles as John Christie and Audrey Mildmay, with Paul Jesson as conductor Fritz Busch, Anthony Calf as Carl Ebert, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as opera impresario Rudolf Bing and Jade Williams as maid Jane Smith.
