The Royal Opera is letting cameras back-stage for a live look at the workings of the theatre on a typical day. On Monday 7 January 2013 from 10.30am they will be broadcasting live on the Royal Opera House website, the Guardian website and on The Space, the Arts Council's digital arts service. Whilst we can't expect what we see to be really typical, it does promise a fascinating glimpse into what happens backstage and there will be 10 hours of uninterrupted activity including rehearsals, interviews and insights.
There will be working rehearsals for Harrison Birtwistle's The Minotaur (which opens on 17 January with John Tomlinson in the title role) and for Kaspar Holten's new production of Eugene Onegin (which opens on 4 February and represents the directorial debut for the new Director of Opera). Also, the Royal Opera Chorus will be rehearsing the chorus of the Hebrew Slaves preparatory to the new production of Verdi's Nabucco (which opens 30 March).
There will also be the opportunity to preview the models, set and costume designs for the new production of Rossini's La donna del Lago (which opens on 17 May with Joyce di Donato in the title role and is directed by Associate Director of Opera, John Fulljames).
Just to make sure that we don't get bored, there are interviews with Kasper Holten (Director of Opera) and Antonio Pappano (Music Director). Plus we are promised insights into the working lives of some of the Jette Parker Young Artists, several international singers (including Rolando Villazon who is performing in La Boheme that evening) and members of the Orchestra.
We don't actually get to watch Villazon performing live in the evening. Instead there will be Act 3 of Die Walkure which was recorded earlier this year, but as they used 21 cameras the results should be fascinating and you can choose to watch the action from three different perspectives on The Space.
When they did this 7.5 million people worldwide watched!
