Temple Winter Festival

Temple Church
Temple Winter Festival is a new week-long festival at Temple Church from 16 to 20 December 2013. The Temple Winter Festival is a collaboration between Temple Church, Hazard Chase and BBC Radio 3. All performances take place in the Temple Church and are broadcast live on Radio 3. There is a Christmas theme to a number of the concerts, Praetorius's Magnificat V is being performed with the Christmas interpolations, and the festival concludes with Handel's Messiah. In between there is Schubert, Arensky, Bach, Vivaldi and much more with performers including Mark Simpson, James Gilchrist, the Temple Church Choir and the BBC Singers with St James's Baroque.


The festival opens on 16 December with Mark Simpson and the Heath Quartet in an interesting programme of Arensky, Stravinsky and Suk culminating in Mozart's Clarinet Quintet. Simpson is the first ever winner of both the BBC Young Musician and BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year Competitions. He is now a BBC New Generation Artist.  The following evening (17/12) the Tallis Scholars, fresh from their celebrations of their 40th birthday present a programme of Magnificats with Magnificat settings by H. Praetorius, Schutz and Arvo Part, also in the programme will be Part's Magnificat Antiphons plus music by Lassus and Hassler.

On 18 December tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook, will be performing Schubert's Winterreise a work which they recorded in 2011. The following evening their is a chance to hear the Temple Church's new music director, Roger Sayer, in action conducting the Temple Church Choir, with Greg Morris playing the newly refurbished organ. The programme includes Vivaldi's Gloria and Bach's three cantatas under the name Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (BWV661, BWV659 and BWV62). The festival's finale on 20 December is David Hill conducting the BBC Singers and St James's Baroque in Handel's Messiah with soloists Ruby Hughes, David Allsopp, Robin Tritschler and Neal Davies.
