This year's Manchester Pride Chamber Music Recitals runs from 7 to 28 August and provide four free recitals as part of the Manchester Pride celebrations. It is described as a 'mix of music celebrating LGBT composers, which involves some of the UK's most experienced classical performers alongside some of Manchester's young, local talent.' Highlights include the UK premiere of music by the American composer Byron Adams, a celebration of Peter Maxwell Davies, music by Ethel Smyth and by Roger Quilter, as well as Simon Butteriss's Lavender Songbook.
Viola player Tom Beer and pianist Adam Taylor pair Britten's Lachrymae with music by John Dowland and the UK premieres of pieces by Byron Adams (7/8). Students from the Royal Northern College of Music, Toby Rowan-Young (violin), Michael Arnold (horn) and Edmund Evans (piano) are performing music by Peter Maxwell Davies (himself Manchester trained), his Mrs Linklater's Tune, Yesnaby Ground and Farewell to Stromness, as well as Concierge by the young local composer Ashil Mistry and Ethel Smyth's Trio in D Minor for Violin, Horn and Piano based on her Concerto for Violin and Horn (14/8).
Leslie Howard will be performing a programme of music by the English composer Roger Quilter including his intriguing Reminiscenes de l'opera La Wally de Catalani (21/8). Finally Baritone Simon Butteriss is joined by pianist Adam Taylor for The Lavender Songbook - How Gay was set to music before the law allowed it, including songs by Noel Coward and Gilbert and Sullivan.
