Nucleo on the South Bank.

Next weekend (28-30 June 2013) the South Bank Centre is celebrating inclusive music making and, in emulation of El Sistema, is creating a pop-up Nucleo with rehearsals, coaching, workshops, discussion and performances from young musicians of all ages. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment have OAE Tots, a session for two to five year olds and their parents, members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Singers join community choirs, Morley College and young musicians from across London to perform Tippett’s A Child of Our Time and excerpts from Holst’s The Planets,  members of the National Youth Orchestra join forces with other young musicians for performance of music from Bernstein West Side Story and everyone is invited to bring an orchestral instrument and join the Neighbourhood Orchestra with Charles Hazelwood.

There are free events and workshops across the weekend, there are family gamelan and ukulele workshops plus Music for Little Ears and Voices workshops for children aged 0 – 4. Children from In Harmony Sistema England (IHSE) join together for vocal workshops, and children from In Harmony projects in Nottingham and Sage Gateshead will be performing in the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Marshall Marcus, CEO of the European Union Youth Orchestra and Chair of Sistema Europe, and a panel of guests will discuss how Venezuela's El Sistema is translating to the UK and Europe, and the future of Sistema-inspired projects in the UK.

There is also a mentoring programme for all participants. Mentors aged between 13 and 25 years, at various stages of their musical lives, join groups of young musicians across the weekend to share their expertise and learn new skills in the process. And if you have very young children then, the Cafe on Level 2 has a special children’s area where the very youngest musicians can play, interact and sing along with the instruments provided.
