Summer and Autumn 2013 at Sadler's Wells

Summer and Autumn 2013 sees Sadler's Wells playing host to friends old and new. British Youth Opera makes its annual visit, popular classics like The Snowman and West Side Story feature alongside cutting edge dance from Hofesh Shechter, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant, Christopher Wheeldon and many others. More traditional ballet companies visiting include both the Birmingham Royal Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet, with Stuttgart giving us a chance to see one of John Cranko's classic ballets.

British Youth Opera makes its annual residency at the Peacock Theatre and this year the company is contributing to the Britten centenary by performing his early operetta Paul Bunyan which was written whilst the composer was in the USA. It was a collaboration with W.H.Auden, premiered in 1941, and the composer put it to one side after its premiere. He did not return to it until much later in life, when he revised the piece in 1976. The companion opera is Domenico Cimarosa's The Secret Marriage, which was premiered in Vienna just months after Mozart's death. The Southbank Sinfonia will be in the pit for both operas. Paco Pena's flamenco dance company appears in July (10 - 13 July). Pena himself now has a career which amazingly spans 40 decades, I can remember seeing his company in Manchester as a student. West Side Story which takes up residence at the theatre for six weeks in the summer (7 August - 22 September) with Jerome Robbin's eternal choreography.

But any Sadlers Wells season is really about dance and for summer and autumn 2013 they have a strong line-up. Birmingham Royal Ballet return with a triple bill consisting of Tombeaux, E=mc2 and Still life at the Penguin Cafe, plus The Sleeping Beauty (15 - 19 October). And Stuttgart Ballet bring John Cranko's full length ballet The Taming of the Shrew with music by Domenico Scarlatti, and Made in Germany an evening of eight ballets which are all UK premieres. (18 - 23 November).

Fresh from his new narrative ballet, Raven Girl for the Royal Ballet, Wayne McGregor returns to Sadlers Wells with his own Random Dance company in another full-length work, Atomos with music by the ambient composers A Winged Victory For The Sullen. (9 - 12 October).

Ashley Page, former Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet, returns to Rambert with a new piece set to music by Aphex Twin and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Also in the programme is work by Israeli choreograppher Barak Marshall and Mark Baldwin's The Comedy of Change.

Other artists appearing during the season include Hofesh Shechter (30 October - 3 November), Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (collaborating with a cast of Argentinian dancers on a tango themed work, 6 - 10 Novemeber), a collaboration between Liang, Russell Maliphant and Christopher Wheeldon (14 - 16 November), Mark Morris Dance Group (27 November - 1 December).

And Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake (4 December - 26 January) and The Snowman in the Birmingham Repertory Theatre Production (27 November - 5 January at the Peacock Theatre).
