December on the South Bank

Andrew Nethsingha and the choir of St. John's College, Cambridge
December on the South Bank means Christmas, with the coming of a number of Christmas shows. But there is also the chance to catch up on the end of The Rest is Noise with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta reaching contemporary music. Visitors include the choir of St John's College Cambridge and the Sixteen, whilst the Morely Chamber Orchestra celebrates past musical directors. And the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment brings us a rarely performed Offenbach comic opera.

The Rest is Noise reaches its final weeks, so that concerts become increasingly contemporary. The London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladmir Jurowski will be performing James MacMillan's Veni, Veni, Emmanuel with Evelyn Glennie, and Thomas Ades's Asyla plus music by Julian Anderson and Mark-Anthony Turnage (7/12). Jurowski conducts the LPO in John Adams's nativity oratorios El Nino with a cast including Kate Royal and Matthew Rose (14/12)

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is joined by a Mark Elder and a cast includng Marlis Petersen, Sarah Connolly, Victoria Simmonds, Robert Murray, Russell Braun, Neil Davies and Brindley Sherrat for the UK premiere of Offenbach's comic opera Fantasio, performed in conjunction with a new Opera Rara recording. (15/12)

Andrew Nethsingha conducts the choir of St John's College Cambridge with the English Chamber Orchestra in a programme which includes Vivaldi's Magnificat in G minor and Gloria, as well as The Four Seasons with Stephanie Gonley as soloists. (6/12) The Sixteen and Harry Christophers bring a programme of Christmas music, combining Britten's A Ceremony of Carols with motets by Poulenc and traditional music (11/12)

Morely Chamber Orchestra celebrates former musical directors of Morely College, performing Tippett's Divertimento on Sellingers Round and Robin Holloway's Third Idyll: Frost at midnight plus music by J.C. Bach and Haydn (11/12)

Singer songwriter Benjamin Clementine (whom I heard perform an acoustic set at this year's Reeperbahn Festival in  Hamburg) performs at the Purcell Room (12 and 13/12).

The main Christmas event is Slava's Snow Show (17/12 - 6/1)  but there is also a chance to hear Samuel West and the Orchestra of St Paul's performing Roald Dahl's Little Red Riding Hood with music by Paul Patterson. plus classic animated film The Snowman with Howard Blake's score played live.(21/12) Fascinating Aida return with their new show Charm Offensive (22/12 - 10/1). And there is an afternoon of Argentinian Tango with live music and demonstrations (15/12)
