First TIme Live and Orchestras Live in Luton and Grantham

First Time Live: Youth in Grimsby
First Time Live: Youth in Grimsby
Orchestras Live brings people and orchestras together in innovative ways, providing access to orchestras for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity (see my review of their Grimsby First Time Live: Youth event early this year). Events coming up in July include thousands of young musicians and singers joining the Halle in Grantham, and young people in Luton writing and performing music with the City of London Sinfonia in concert where Luton Sixth Formers will be helping as part of the management team.

Grantham Leisure Centre will come alive to the sound of 1,500 young musicians and singers from across Lincolnshire as they perform with the Hallé on 9 July 2014. For children involved in Lincolnshire Music and Arts Education Hub’s First Access programme, it offers the opportunity to play and sing with an international symphony orchestra, experiencing the power of a live orchestra first hand. The concert will include a specially composed work which is collaboration a between musicians of the Hallé and young instrumentalists.

Over in Luton groups of young people at 19 Primary schools have been working with composer John K Miles and tutors from Luton Music Service to explore creative ideas on the theme of Carnival, and have written some new music. This will be played at a concert on 17 July 2014, when several hundred people will join the City of London Sinfonia to perform their new piece in two concerts at the UK Centre for Carnival Arts in Luton which will also include some orchestral repertoire played by City of London Sinfonia. Students from Luton Sixth Form College will be helping to manage this part of the project. Both concerts will be live streamed to all Primary schools in Luton, enabling many more young people and their families to share the experience and join in with the new song. Afterwards the Carnival piece will be available for use by schools across the country through the Charanga online learning resource.
