Spitalfields Music's Winter Festival starts on 5 December 2014 and runs until 16 December with a lively programme of events mixing community music with early music, contemporary and much else besides. Performances take place at the glorious Christ Church Spitalfields, the characterful and not less interesting Shoreditch Church along with other venues including a concert in the Tower of London at the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula.

Iestyn Davies features this year, he and lutenist Elizabeth Kenny perform Dowland, Purcell and Handel in England's Orpheus (5/12) and Davies joins the English Concert for a programme of Bach, Wassenaer, Buxtehude and Locatelli including arias from The Christmas Oratorio, and the cantata Vernugte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust (11/12).

Other ensembles include Harry Christophers and the Sixteen in seasonal music by Palestrina, Holst, Warlock and RVW (6/12), Patrick Allies and Siglo de Oro in seasonal music from Josquin, Tallis and Hildegard to Britten, Giles Swayne and Eric Whitacre (9/12), the Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments in Nine Daies Wonder (10/12), John Tavener's Lament for Jerusalem, described by the composer as 'a mystical love song' with Mary Bevan, Andrew Watts and the Choir of London conducted by Jeremy Summerly (11/12), Le Concert Spirituel in Muffat, Purcell, Biber, Charpentier, Corelli and JS Bach (12/6),  Quatuor Diotima in world premieres by Gerard Pesson and Sam Hayden, plus Harvey and Bartok (14/12), Clare Wilkinson and Fretwork in music and poetry from Byrd, Dowland, Donne, Shakespeare, John Woolrich, Warlock, TS ElioT and Larkin (15/12).

The Clerks and Edward Wickham bring their latest science based programme, a fascinating exploration of the way we hear (or think we hear) voices using recorded and live music from Isaac, Bach and Webern (15/12), whilst Mahoganny Opera Group presents Folie a Deux, a collaboration between British composer Emily Hall, Icelandic writer Sjón and which features vocals from Swedish jazz artist Sofia Jernberg. (16/12) and Alan Gilbey presents Tales from the Ditch, tantalising stories from the East End and beyond (5-7/12) . Rich Mix sees the group Scanner being joined by the avant-garde Polish ensemble Kwartludium with some new works and some collective improvisation (12/12)

There are a number of community based events, mixing local groups with professional performers. Tower Hamlets Sings presents Ex Cathedra with young people from Tower Hamlets (5/12), Hackney Creative Jazz Ensemble performs with Thames Big Band (8/12), and Sound Explorers presents Moon Man with Isabelle Adams (10-11/12). There is a song workshop with Loud & Live All Sing!, Chaps Choir, Women Sing East, Isabelle Adams, Dominic Stichbury and Laka D.
