The 10th edition of Second Movement's rough for opera returns to the Cockpit Theatre, Gateforth Street, London, NW8 8EH on Monday 17 November 2014 with new opera from Timothy Cape and Sam Wilson, Jenni Watson and Caroline Wilkins. Second Movement's scratch night for opera provides a wonderful opportunity to hear new operatic works in progress, and each performance is followed by a Q&A so that you get a chance to contribute feedback. The 17 November performances include a rapper, a singing percussionist and an antique gramophone - be warned!
Composer and virtuoso saxophonist Jenni Watson will be presenting R.I.O.T. which is a rock inspired opera for teenagers, looking at the involvement of teenagers in the 2011 riots. The libretto is a collaboration between Watson and Lucan Mills, an up and coming UK rap artist.
Composer Timothy Cape and percussionist/vocalist Sam Wilson have collaborated on Because that is perceived to be the hardest task which uses temple blocks and voice, with Wilson singing and playing percussion! It explores memory and rhythmic nuances in casual speech and is semi-improvised. The performance is presented by the collective, Bastard Assignments.
Australian composer/performer Caroline Wilkins returns to rough for opera with her new piece, The Dressing Room written for solo performer and antique gramophone. It takes place in a backstage dressing room of an opera house where the performer reflects on her curious existence.
