Classical 'club nights' have become an increasingly common feature of the musical landscape in London, as performers seek to blur the boundaries both of the conventional concert event and what classical music actually is. Composer Gabriel Prokofiev's Nonclassical has been running its monthly club nights for some time. At the Victoria in Dalston, their regular night on Thursday 8 June 2016 will feature an intriguing pairing, Estonian fiddler and singer Maarja Nuut and the contemporary music ensemble The Hermes Experiment.
Maarja Nuut combines traditional dance tunes, songs and stories with live electronics to create an intricate, layered soundscape in a space where minimalism and experimental music meet the village musical traditions of pre-war Europe. Her second album Une meeles (In the Hold of Dream) has just been released.
The Hermes Experiment, made up of harp, clarinet, soprano and double bass, will be performing METROPOLIS: a programme exploring the sights and sounds of the city.
