Arvo Pärt and a Littlemore: Oxford's celebration of the Estonian composer's work

Celebrations planned for Arvo Pärt's 85th birthday in 2020 included a large-scale festival of his music in the UK. Inevitably cancelled, this is now taking place this month hosted by Music at Oxford in collaboration with the Estonian Embassy in London, Arvo Pärt Centre and TORCH. From 18 to 25 November 2022, there are 15 events in and around Oxford celebrating Arvo Pärt’s significant contribution and legacy through music, film and talks. Performers include the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, conductor Tõnu Kaljuste, the choir of New College, Oxford, O/Modernt and Hugo Ticciati, the Carice Singers, conductor George Parris, the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet and Schola Cantorum Oxford.

The festival's full title is Arvo Pärt and a Littlemore, taking its name from Pärt's Littlemore Tractus, premiered in 2001 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Cardinal Newman. The words come from a sermon Newman preached in Littlemore in 1843 and Pärt's piece was premiered at the church of St Mary & St Nicholas, Littlemore where it will again be performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir as part of the festival.
