Cantate at the World Choir Games in Riga |
This year's World Choir Games were the eighth. The first event was in Austria in 2000, and recent festivals have been in China (2010), USA (2012) and Austria(2008). The games represent the largest choir competitions in the world. Open to all amateur choirs and they provide competitive categories for experienced choirs as well as open categories.
Cantate was founded 20 years ago by Michael Kibblewhite as a youth choir based in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. It has now grown to three choirs offering young people from Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Essex a musical education which encompasses not just singing, but percussion and rhythm workshops. There also now a bursary fund to ensure that no student is unable to join the choirs.
