The City Music Foundation has been launched to provide new opportunities for aspiring professional musicians in the early stages of their careers, through financial support and through mentoring. The foundation brings together a number of institutions from the City of London, including the Barbican Arts Centre, Milton Court Concert Hall, the London Symphony Orchestra, the City of London Festival and the Worshipful Company of Musicians, to support young artists beyond the end of formal musical training or education. The foundation will identify inspirational soloists and ensembles and make them accessible to a new generation of audiences in the UK and abroad, supporting classical, jazz, world or folk music genres.
Those receiving support will get financial support to fund a series of concerts (for up to a two year period), along with mentoring from experienced artists in their field, marketing and publicity support. The idea being to equip the young artists with the tools they need to promote themselves. Grants will be awarded annually. Closing date for applications in 2013 is 7 June.
The foundation is the main beneficiary of the the Lord Mayor's Appeal 2013. The forthcoming recital by Robert Quinney on the the new chamber organ at the Mansion House, on June 10, is one of a series of events in support of the appeal. The foundation was launched last week with a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Sympyhony at St. Paul's Cathedral.
