The next concert from the Chetham's Symphony Orchestra, Images of World War I, will be mixing sound and image. Conducted by Simon Threlfall, the 100 strong orchestra, made up of students aged 14 to 18 from Chetham's in Manchester, will be performing at the Royal Northern College of Music on 20 February 2015, along with live illustrations from James Mayhew. Celebrating the life of the late Michael Kennedy, the concert includes music by George Butterworth written just before the First World War, and RVW's Pastoral Symphony which was conceived of whilst RVW was serving in the war and complete on his return. Also in the programme is Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with soloists Eudald Buch who is studying at Chetham's with Murray McLachland and Peter Lawson.
The orchestra will also be performing the RVW symphony at its family matinee at the Royal Northern College on 19 February, again with images from James Mayhew.
James Mayhew is a former artist in residence at the Edinburgh International Festival and the author of the Katie books. Those attending the concert at the Royal Northern College of Music will not only be able to see Mayhew's illustrations but to buy them as well.
With around 300 students, aged 8 - 18, Manchester-based Chetham’s is the largest specialist Music School in the UK and the only Music School based in the North of England.
