Opera Prelude is best known for its series of morning opera-based lecture recitals presented by young artists, but the company is now presenting a series of evening recitals. In The Work of an Artist: A Life of Love and Labour, on 7 March 2017, James Way (tenor) & Natalie Burch (piano) at St John’s Church, Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill, will be performing inspired by great artworks and artists, with songs by Purcell, Schubert, Mozart and Poulenc, including Poulenc’s cycle Le travail du peintre seting texts about painters who were especially dear to Poulenc’s favourite poets, and the programme ends with Jake Heggie’s Friendly Persuasions, a set of songs based on real correspondence between Poulenc and some of the most important people in his life. James Way and Natalie Burch were winners of the 2nd Prize in the 62nd Kathleen Ferrier Awards at the Wigmore Hall.

Further ahead on 19 April, Anna Harvey (mezzo) and Mark Austin (piano) present Touched by the Divine a journey in song exploring aspects of the Divine, including Arianna a Naxos Haydn’s extraordinary quasi-operatic cantata for voice and keyboard and one of Schumann’s best-loved song cycles setting poetry by Eichendorff which aimed to transcend earthly experience. This recital takes place at 128 Kensington Church Street, Clementi House, which was the London home of Muzio Clementi (1752-1832), composer, pianist, and ‘Father of the Pianoforte. Then on 10 May Alice Privett (soprano), Julian Perkins (harpsichord) present Sounds of Seduction: the powerful women of early opera.
