A celebration of words spoken and sung

Echo Vocal Ensemble
Echo Vocal Ensemble
On 1 April 2022, Echo Vocal Ensemble is being joined by poet Roger McGough at St John the Baptist Church, Hoxton for a celebration of words spoken and words sung, an exploration of slowing down, speeding up again, and what freedom might mean to us now. There will be poetry from McGough's recent collection, Safety in Numbers plus music from 17th century to the present day ranging from Purcell and Robert Ramsey to Undine Smith Moore (1904-1989), the American composer described as the "Dean of Black Women Composers".

Formed in 2017, Echo Vocal Ensemble originally came together through Genesis Sixteen, the Sixteen's young artists scheme, and the ensemble brings together young professional singers from across the UK, working both with and without a conductor. The group was Ensemble-in-Residence at the 2019 Ryedale Festival when their appearances included a concert alongside poet Roger McGough
