Music of Sanctuary and Solidarity

Julian Azkoul's United Strings of Europe is joining forces with vocal collective SANSARA, director Tom Herring, and Syrian oud player Basel Saleh to present Music of Sanctuary and Solidarity, a sequence of choral and instrumental music on the timely and enduring themes of sanctuary, solidarity and displaced peoples at the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square on Friday 25 November 2022.

The concert will feature the world premiere of Kyiv-born composer Natalia Tsupryk's A Quiet Night (Tyhohi Nochi), setting Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan, with quotations from one of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. 

Also in the programme is the European premiere of Caroline Shaw's To The Hands, a six movement cantata responding to Dietrich Buxtehude’s Ad manus from his Membra Jesu nostri, the UK premiere of The Journey by Lebanese composer Houtaf Khoury, commissioned by United Strings of Europe, and music by Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir,
