Marios Papadopoulos and the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra at the Sheldonian Theatre
In 2002, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra was appointed orchestra in residence at the University of Oxford, the first orchestra ever to be so appointed. Now, they are celebrating the 20th anniversary of this event with a concert in the Sheldonian Theatre on Thursday 18 November 2022.
Marios Papadopoulos, the orchestra's founder and music director, conducts the orchestra in Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. with violinist Jennifer Pike, and Bruckner's Te Deum, with the choirs of Merton College and The Queen's College plus soloists Lauren Fagan, Claudia Huckle, David Junghoon Kim and Simon Shibambu. The orchestra's conducting fellow, Cayenna Ponchione-Bailey conducts Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, with students from the university performing Side by Side with the orchestra, and the premiere of Jieun Lee's The Withdrawl. Jieun Lee's work was selected from the orchestra's 2021 Composers Workshop.
The orchestra's residency provides a diverse range of opportunities to Oxford University students, including performance opportunities, from solo and chamber recitals at the Sheldonian Theatre to performing as a member of the orchestra, or competing for the chance to play a concerto with the orchestra, plus masterclasses and workshops.
