Midsummer Opera - Fidelio

On Friday 23 November and Saturday 24 November Midsummer Opera will be giving concert performances of Beethoven's Fidelio at St. John's Church, Waterloo. A church which opened in 1824 to celebrate the victory of Napoleon, so a very apt venue for Beethoven's only opera.

I have to declare an interest in the performance as soprano Zoe South, who sing the title role, sang in my opera When a Man Knows, and conductor David Roblou was musical director of When a Man Knows. South is a young dramatic soprano who includes Brunnhilde in her repertoire, so expect Fidelio to be thrilling.

John Upperton sings Florestan, John Milne is Rocco, Stephen Holloway is Don Pizzaro and Ian Caddy sings Don Fernando (wearing his director's hat, Ian also directed When a Man Knows).

Midsummer reappear in April 2013 with Massenet's Werther, then further ahead they plan Otello, La Fanciulla del West and La Clemenza di Tito.
