AyseDeniz Gokcin

AyseDeniz Gockin
The young Turkish pianist AyseDeniz Gokcin, who made something of a stir with her arrangements of Pink Floyd songs a la Liszt (see my review), is having a busy time at the moment. She is giving a recital at St. James's Church, Piccadilly on Thursday April 25 with the Talent Unlimited Chamber Ensemble. She has also been celebrating the 30th anniversary of Michael Jackson performing Billie Jean by arranging the song and creating an accompanying video.

The programme for the concert on April 25 includes Gokcin's own Pink Floyd arrangements, plus music by the contemporary Turkish pianist/composer Fazil Say who has been in some trouble with the Turkish authorities. Gockin will be joining the ensemble for music by Dvorak and Rachmaninov, there is also Bach, Tabakov and Vieutemps plus Handel arranged Halvorsen - quite a mix.

AyseDeniz Gokcin's Billie Jean video is available on YouTube, in it she uses a whole variety of piano sounds, both conventional and unconventional including using Mongolian horse hair for the string section, played from the inside of the piano by plucking the strings, she also brought into play a broken LP and used her hands as a damper to manipulate the sound. Quite a feat.
