We don't get many of Paul Hindemith's large scale operas in the UK, though Mathis der Mahler did make a fleeting appearance at Covent Garden in 1995. There is a chance in Linz, as on Saturday 8 April 2017 Hindemith's opera about Johannes Kepler, Die Harmonie der Welt opened in a new production directed by Dietrich Hilsdorf at the Linz Musiktheater, with musical direction from Gerrit Prießnitz & Daniel Spaw, and Seho Chang as Kepler.
Hindemith conducted the premiere of the opera in Munich in 1957, with Hindemith using Kepler's study of the planetary system as a metaphor for his own particular musical system. Kepler was, amongst other things, a teacher of mathematics in Linz, an association which has helped bring about the production.
The opera opened on 8 April and there are performances until 11 June 2017, full information from the Landestheater Linz website.
