The Sacconi Quartet is launching a video of Jonathan Dove's Out of Time in aid of the Hands Up Foundation which is helping Syrians in need. The video launches on 10 March 2021, and was recorded in the derelict Edwardian splendour of the Leas Pavilion in Folkestone. It will be available to buy via Amazon Prime with all proceeds going to the Hands Up Foundation.
The Sacconi Quartet is now Quartet in Residence in Folkestone as part of Sounds Folkestone, a collective portal for all classical music activity in the town. The quartet has worked closely with Jonathan Dove on a number of projects including co-commissioning him to write a new quartet in celebration of the Sacconi’s 20th anniversary in 2021. Presented by Sounds Folkestone, the performance of Out of Time was filmed in the Leas Pavilion as part of a campaign to restore the 1902 building to its former glory.
Dove's Out of Time was written in 2001 for the Vanbrugh String Quartet and commissioned by the Summer Music Society of Dorset and Mrs Elizabeth Allsebrook, in memory of Peter Allsebrook.
The Hands Up Foundation aims to transform the lives of Syrians in need through health and education programmes in Syria and neighbouring countries. This is a particularly poignant moment, given that March 2021 marks ten years since the start of Syria’s conflict. The charity is a cause close to the heart of the Sacconi Quartet, who commissioned the Syrian-themed tenor and string quartet In Damascus from composer Jonathan Dove in 2016 [see my review of their recording of In Damascus on Signum].
