The Danish conductor Thomas Dausgaard takes over as chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, when the orchestra's present chief conductor Donald Runnicles becomes conductor emeritus. Dausgaard has a strong commitment to new music as well as some other very striking ideas which feature in the new season.

Perhaps the most striking is a re-creation of the concert in 1808 when Beethoven presented the premieres of his fifth and sixth symphonies. This marathon concert included both symphonies, the concert aria Ah perfido, the Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus from the Mass in C major, Piano Concerto no. 4, Piano fantasia in G minor and Choral Fantasy. Thomas Dausgaard and the BBC Symphony Orchestra will be joined by Malin Christensson soprano, Clara Mouriz alto, Stuart Jackson tenor, Benjamin Appl bass, Jan Lisiecki piano and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Voices to re-created the mammoth concert. It all starts at 3pm on Sunday 2 October 2016 in Glasgow City Halls and with two intervals ends at 7.30pm!

Five new pieces have been commissioned with composers taking inspiration from Scotland. The new works include Fèin-Aithnem, by Glasgow's Jay Capperauld, whose title is Gaelic for the phrase "self-identity" , and composer Helen Grime has taken inspiration from two pictures by Scottish artist Joan Eardley for her piece
