The International Opera Awards return on Sunday 15 May 2016, and the short-list has recently been announced. It is quite a long, short-list with 20 categories, and six nominees in each category. CD (Complete Opera) includes Donizetti's Les Martyrs from Opera Rara, and Smetana's Dalibor from Jiři Bělohlávek and the BBC Symphony Orchestra on Onyx, whilst CD (Operatic Recital) includes Bryan Hymel's Heroique. The Rediscovered Work category includes Donizetti's Il furioso all’isola di San Domingo (performed by English Touring Opera), Mascagni's Guglielmo Ratcliff (from Wexford Festival) and Tippett's The Ice Break (from Birmingham Opera Company).

One quirk of the awards is that the nominations are not for any particular event, but for the balance of the artists work, which means that we might have experienced only part of the whole. This is particularly true of the Director category includes the intriguing mix of Kasper Holten, Damiano Michieletto, Katie Mitchell, Laurent Pelly, David Pountney and Mariusz Trelinski. Female Singer category includes Anna Bonitatibus, Mariella Devia, Rosa Feola, Christine Goerke, Evelyn Herlitzius and Anna Netreboko. Whilst the Male Singer category includes Javier Camarena, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Stéphane Degout, Igor Golovatenko, Gregory Kunde, Henry Waddington.

New Productions include Bellini's I Puritani from WNO, and Handel's Saul from Glyndebourne. World Premieres include Harrison Birtwistle's The Cure at the Aldeburgh Festival, and Jennifer Higdon's Cold Mountain at Santa Fe. Young Conductor category includes Mirga Gražinyté-Tyla, recently appointed as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's new conductor.

You can see the full list on the awards website, and you can also vote for the Readers awards.
