Vasily Petrenko, the chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, bring his other orchestra to the UK for a tour this month when he conducts the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (Oslo Filharmonien) in a six-date tour with a busy schedule which starts at Bridgewater Hall on 7 March 2016, and then takes in The Anvil, Basingstoke (9/3), Cadogan Hall, London (10/3), Colston Hall, Bristol (11/3), Symphony Hall, Birmingham (12/3) and Saffron Hall (13/3). The programme for the tour includes Grieg's Lyric Suite, plus Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto with Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski, the Tchaikovsky and Sibelius violin concertos with Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud, Mahler's Symphony No. 5 and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.

Petrenko has been chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra since 2013 and is keen to show the UK what the band can do. The orchestra has a long and distinguished history. In its present form it dates from 1919 and has been at its present home, the striking Oslo Concert Hall, since 1977. But the orchestra has its origins in the Christiania Musikerforening (Christiania Musical Association) founded by Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen (Christiania is the old name for Oslo).
