George Lloyd rareity comes to Croydon

Confirmation of another rare opera to look forward to in 2013, George Lloyd's Iernin. 2013 is Lloyd's centenary year so it is very appropriate that Surrey Opera are performing the piece this year, 21-27 October in Croydon. Iernin is his first opera, the piece was premiered in 1934 in Penzance and had a short season in London in 1935.  Surrey Opera's performances will be conducted by Jonathan Butcher and directed by Alexander Hargreaves. In case you are wondering about the title, the opera is set in the world of Celtic Faery (the opera was highly commended by Rutland Boughton). There is a recording, taken from BBC broadcast, on Albany Records with a strong cast. Further details of the performances from the Surrey Opera website.

  1. Surrey Opera made a very good job of Coleridge Taylor's Thelma so definitely one for the diary.
