Opera Restor'd - Lampe - Pyramus and Thisbe |
The recent performance of Lampe's The Dragon of Wantley at the London Handel Festival (see my review) seems to have stirred interest in the composer, with a number of my correspondents being intrigued by the production. It is heartening that Lampe's delightful work seems to be having something of a revival this season, as Hand Made Opera is teaming up with Opera Restor'd to revive the latter's production of Lampe's Pyramus and Thisbe. Coming a few years after The Dragon of Wantley the piece also lampoons Italian opera, using a story taken from Shakespeare. It is being performed at York International Shakespeare Festival on May 10 at the National Centre for Early Music, York, and you can read nice preview on the OMTF website.
Then on 16 May, there is a further performance of Lampe's
The Dragon of Wantley at Bath Festival when Vauxhall Players present the piece in a promenade concert in the Capability Brown-designed landscape garden at Newton Park, home of
Bath Spa University. Further information from the
Bath Festival website.
