Rameau to Reich: Les Siècles at the Aldeburgh Festival

François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles
François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles
François-Xavier Roth and his ensemble, Les Siècles, are perhaps best remembered for their performance of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring at the BBC Proms in 2013, in a programme that ranged from Lully to Stravinsky with each era played on instruments of the period. Such programmes are the group's trademark and their forthcoming residency at the Aldeburgh Festival (10 to 15 June 2016) will feature music from Rameau to Steve Reich. Their first programme, on 11 June, combines Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé with Rameau's Daphnis et Eglé, whilst on 12 June soloists of the orchestra pay homage to the legendary French harpist Pierre Jamet, whose ensemble of flute, harp and string trio premiered Roussel’s ravishing serenade. Then on 14 June the orchestra will perform Steve Reich’s Tehilim alongside Bach’s Magnificat, and their final concert on 15 June sees them joined by the festival's artistic director Pierre-Laurent Aimard and violinist Thomas Zehetmair for Berg's Chamber Concerto and Mozart’s Gran Partita.

The orchestra has also been collaborating with the illustrator and animator Grégoire Pont, and on 2 November 2016 at the Royal Festival Hall Pont will draw and animate live in response to Les Siècles performance, something he calls Cinesthetics, in a programme which includes Maurice Ravel's Ma mère l’oye, plus Debussy's La Mer & Jeux, and Ravel's Piano concerto for the Left Hand with soloist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.
